A lantern slide featuring impressive acrobatics
Lantern slides were designed for projection, allowing images to be shared on a larger scale. Made from glass plates, they are fragile and can be difficult to handle.
Many of the Libraries Tasmania lantern slides have been digitised, making them easier to view and helping to preserve the originals. This slide comes from the collection of Frederick Smithies—a Tasmanian conservationist, bushwalker, wilderness explorer, and photographer. The image, from the early 20th Century, is believed to show Smithies and a friend performing acrobatics in front of his home in Trevallyn, Launceston.
