Membership

Membership is open to everyone in Tasmania. It is free and enables you to borrow from any of our libraries around the state and access a range of eResources.

Temporary online-only membership

Residents of Tasmania can join the library as a temporary online-only member for instant access to our eResources and to place holds on physical items.

Join now

You will need to visit a library within 21 days to complete your registration and gain full membership. Please bring proof of identity.

Full membership

Residents of Tasmania can join in person at any of our libraries. Please bring proof of identity. Children and people under 18 years of age need to bring a parent or guardian with them when they join to act as guarantor.

Visitors to Tasmania

Visitors can apply in person at any of our libraries for a 3 month membership. This entitles you to borrow physical items such as books, magazines and DVDs. Our libraries also offer a range of facilities such as Wi-Fi, computers, printing, photocopying and scanning.

Other types of membership

  • Family day carer - for individuals registered with their local council as a Family Day Carer. Available in addition to a personal membership.

  • Home educators - available in addition to a personal membership.

  • Home library service - for those who have difficulty visiting the library in person or are unable to carry library items home.

  • Independent young adults - young people who are 12-17 years of age who are not living with their parent(s) or guardian(s) and who are responsible for looking after themselves, particularly their own finances.

  • No address registration - for those who do not have a fixed address. An email address is required.

  • Non-responsible adult - a person over the age of 18 years who is not responsible for their legal and financial obligations. A guarantor is required.

  • Organisation - available for organisations with an Australian Business Number (ABN). The manager acts as the guarantor.

  • Teacher - available in addition to a personal membership. The principal acts as the guarantor.

Identification requirements

One piece of photo identification showing your current address, such as a Tasmanian driver’s licence or a Tasmanian Government Personal Information Card.

OR

Two or more forms of identification that show your name, date of birth and current address, such as a Medicare card, birth certificate, passport, bank statement or water / power bill.

We do not charge overdue fees, so if you are late returning a book, please drop it off to a library at your earliest convenience.

Loan periods

  • Books, CDs, DVDs and games: 3 weeks

  • Magazines (physical): 1 week

  • New Release Express Service: 1 week

  • eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines: Up to 21 days

Renewing your loans

Most loans can be renewed twice if they haven’t been requested by another member. If we have your email address, we will remind you to renew or return your loans. You can ask for a renewal at your local library, or you can renew your loans in My Account.

Returning your loans

Loans can be returned to any of our libraries. Many of our libraries have after-hours return chutes – check your local library. All eBook, eAudiobook and eMagazine loans are automatically returned to the library on their due date.

Placing holds

You can place a hold on items that are in any of our libraries around the state and have them delivered to your local library, all for free. If you can’t find what you want in our catalogue, please ask our friendly staff to help you.

You can have up to 15 holds on physical items. When your hold is ready to collect, we will let you know and you will have 14 days to collect it.

My Account

Log into My Account at the top right of our website. When you are logged in you can renew your physical loans, place holds on items in our catalogue, update your contact details, pay for lost or damaged items, change your PIN/password and more.

Forgotten your password/PIN?

If you have forgotten the password/PIN for your library account, you can reset it by going to the My Account log in page and using the Forgotten Your Password/PIN link. A recovery link will be sent to the email address on file at your library.

Renewing your loans

Renew your loans in My Account. Most loans can be renewed twice if they haven’t been requested by another member.

Managing your holds

In My Account, you can see what you have a hold on and where you are in the queue. You can also change the pickup location, cancel a hold and even suspend a hold so that it won’t become available when you can’t come into the library (e.g. when you’re holidaying).

Membership renewal

Most memberships require renewal every 2 years to make sure that we have the most up to date contact details for each member.

If your membership needs to be renewed, you will see 'Requires Renewal' in My Account, or a similar message when you try to place a hold or log into an eResource.

Most members will be able to renew their membership by using the 'Renew now' button on the Personal Information tab in My Account. If this option is not available, please contact any of our libraries and staff will be happy to assist you.

Guarantors

As a guarantor on someone else’s library account (for example, your child), you take responsibility to ensure that their books are returned and to pay the charges for any library items that they lose or damage.

Overdue items

Libraries Tasmania does not charge overdue fines. If you're running late to get a book back, just drop it off next time you're coming past, or return it to another library as soon as you've finished with it. If we have your email address, we will remind you to renew or return your loans. Note, if items are not returned within three weeks of the due date, you won’t be able to borrow any more physical items.

Lost or damaged items

If you have accidentally lost or damaged an item, you won’t be able to borrow physical items and we'll ask you to pay a fair replacement cost based on the item's age and condition.

If you find a lost item, simply return it – all charges will be removed and you will be able to borrow again.

If you pay for a lost item, keep your receipt and if the item turns up within three months, you can get a refund.
