A glimpse into our collections
Set of printed toy theatre drops depicting whaling scenes / by Louis Foubert

Whaling is an important collecting area for the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. Our collections include many items about whaling in Tasmania and around the world.

Published in Amsterdam by Louis Foubert, this set of six toy theatre backdrops from the 1700s shows a busy Dutch whaling scene in Greenland waters. The layered panels create a three-dimensional effect, with five whaling ships, harpooners in small boats and two polar bears on the Arctic ice. These prints offer a glimpse into Dutch whaling at the time and add to the many whaling stories held in our collections.
