Polus Antarcticus
This colourful map shows how seventeenth-century Europeans imagined the far south of the world. Centred on the South Pole, it includes, among other places, parts of Tasmania. At its centre is the vast Terra Australis Incognita – the legendary southern continent. The map is beautifully decorated with scenes of people, animals, birds, boats and even a penguin, reflecting both curiosity and speculation about lands beyond European knowledge. First published by Henricus Hondius and updated by other Dutch mapmakers, this edition was published in 1680.
